ANNOUNCEMENT

R.I.P Richard Hill

It is with sadness that I announce the passing of one of our much loved members, Richard Hill.
Richard fought a gallant and brave battle against an unrelenting illness, however he succumbed to it last night.
Richard  was not a champion squash player, but he was a champion person who will be sorely missed, not only at Mullaloo squash, but throughout the wider Perth squash community.
I feel privileged to have known Richard and the condolences of all at MSC go out to his family.

2017
Hello everyone,
I hope you all have had a relaxing and refreshing Xmas and new year break and are fully energized to tackle a new squash season?
We have 2 new staff members joining MSC over the next few weeks; Peter Meintjes and Jeannie Gulloti will be joining our crew, so when you see them hard at work  behind the counter…please be gentle.
I would like to thank Lyn, Cheryl, Glen, Sanny John and the Goldies for running such a smooth ship over the past 6 weeks,
whilst Deb and  I were away on holiday.
The addition of new staff is no reflection on the great and tireless job Lyn and Cheryl in particular, have done over the past 18 odd years for Deb and I, but is an opportunity to extend their shelf life at MSC.
Also my thanks to Glen, for once again getting our teams onto the paddock for another season.
Now for the pain…FEES…..Despite increases from WA Squash, I have kept the fees the same as the last several years;
Can you please pay them ASAP...I have a holiday to pay for!!

Great fun had at our Saturday round robin Xmas Party

Sports that will save your life revealed
30 November 2016

AN INTERNATIONAL research collaboration, led by University of Sydney, has found that cycling, swimming, aerobics and racquet sports offer life saving benefits compared to running and football.

Published today in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, the study also found that death from cardiovascular disease (CVD) was reduced in people who participated in swimming, racquet sports and aerobics.

The study examined 80,000 adults over 30 years of age to investigate the link between participation in six different “exercise disciplines” and death, including cycling, swimming, racquet sports, aerobics, football and running.

The researchers drew on responses from 11 nationally representative annual health surveys for England and Scotland, carried out between 1994 and 2008.

This is what they found

Compared with study participants who did not participate in the corresponding sport, risk of death from any cause was:

· 47 per cent lower among those who played racquet sports (tennis, squash, badminton)

· 28 per cent lower among swimmers

· 27 per cent lower among those who participated in aerobics

· 15 per cent lower among cyclists.

Compared with study participants who did not participate in the corresponding sport, risk of death from cardiovascular disease was:

· 56 per cent lower among those who played racquet sports

· 41 per cent lower among swimmers

· 36 per cent lower among those who participated in aerobics.

“Our findings indicate that it’s not only how much and how often, but also what type of exercise you do that seems to make the difference,” said lead author Associate Professor Emmanuel Stamatakis from University of Sydney.

“Participation in specific sports may have various benefits for health. These observations with the existing evidence should support the sport community together with other sectors to design and implement effective health enhancing exercise programs and physical activity in general.”

CALLING ALL DRINKERS WITH A SQUASH PROBLEM (Yes YOU!)

There’s going to be a regular Mullaloo Squash Club get-together approximately every 4 weeks on a Saturday afternoon after the 2-4pm Round Robin session. Non-drinkers and designated drivers also welcome J

It’s expected we’ll meet from around 3-5pm Saturday (but please say if Sunday is preferable) for drinks / nibbles / sausage sizzle etc. and have a drink, chat and general whinge about how we were robbed in that last game and what body part gave up on us this week!

This is for EVERYONE who plays squash at the club whether you are a pennant player, general member or non-member with the aim of bringing all the various round robin groups, pennant groups and groups of friends together. Hopefully this will lead to us having more social events of various descriptions from drinks after a game to a Christmas Party and everyone making the most of the club.

With this in mind there will also be a squash club Christmas Party at the club this year, probably late Nov / early Dec.

All I’m after at this stage is an idea of numbers of people who would / could come along on a Saturday, even if infrequently, then we’ll set a date for the first one and let you all know.

Please put your name down on the form stuck to the white board if you could make it to the odd Saturday afternoon and if interested in the Christmas get-together / party and / or other social events at the club.

Hang on to this flyer and please let other players know about the events planned. Anyone can call or sms me with an interest in the events and I’ll add them to the list.
